    1. “Unlocking” an iTouch or iPhone allows you to use it’s wireless capabilities outside of the USA, and for an iPhone, outside of the ATT service carrier.

You don’t have to unlock your iTouch, and it actually voids Apple’s warranty, so if you unlock it and have trouble with it, Apple will make you pay for any repairs.

If you decide to do it, good luck!

    2. Unlocking an iphone will allow you to use it with non-AT&T carriers. Obviously, if you want to use an iPhone with a non-AT&T carrier, you will have to do this.

Unlocking an iPod refers to situations in which you set a screen lock code and then later forgot it. You’ll need to somehow unlock the iPod without the code. You do not need special software to do this.

“Unlock” can also be used to refer to the process of “jailbreaking” iphones and ipod touch so that they can run unapproved third-party applications. Normally, these devices can only run applications downloaded as part of the apple update process. Jailbreaking usually voids your warranty and can result in “bricking,” or completely disabling your phone, so it’s not something to be done lightly. A web search on Jailbreak will pull up tons of info on this.
