How do you tell the difference between itouch generations?

I want to get an iTouch but I was wondering how to tell the 2nd generation (which is what I want) from the 1st. Like if I buy it from Costco or Sam’s (you don’t get to see the itouch you bring that cardboard or plastic thing to the register and they give you the itouch) how do I tell which generation it is?
Can you see the speakers from the plastic thing?
